Abstract

President Biden hopes to build upon the criminal justice reforms that President Trump enacted. This commentary summaries the empirical evidence in favour of reducing sentence lengths for many offenders, including even violent offenders, which is the reform that will do the most to reduce our prison population. As the evidence shows, shorter sentences will actually reduce recidivism, enhance public safety, and save tax dollars.
