Abstract

American citizens have a right not to be misled by their own government. On May 3, 2021, the Inspector General for the United States Department of Defense announced an evaluation "to determine the extent to which DoD has taken actions regarding Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP)[,]" the latest buzzword for UFOs. While the purpose of the evaluation is unknown, the IG has an opportunity to explore the extent to which the U.S. military has engaged in a publicity effort since the late 1940s to encourage belief in UFOs and alien visitation. I suggest three questions the IG might explore.

Keywords: disinformation, hoax, UFOs
