Abstract
Structural design of high-rise building under seismic loading is primarily concerned with the provision of shear wall. The most appropriate method for resisting lateral loads is shear wall systems. Conventional reinforced concrete shear wall and steel plate shear walls are used worldwide for resisting wind loads and earthquake loads. Composite construction methods have accepted in the industry in which composite columns, beams and slabs are started in practice recently. Now researches on Composite shear wall had gained interest considering the advantages over reinforced concrete and steel shear walls. Providing better stiffness and ductility, reduction in dead load and thickness of the wall, better structural response, reduced cost and time of construction etc. make composite shear wall an excellent system for earthquake resistant structures. This paper reviews the investigations carried on the seismic behaviour of shear wall in multistorey buildings using various approaches. Researchers mainly focused on the performance of different types of composite shear wall in comparison with reinforced and steel plate shear wall. Experimental investigations give the better response of composite shear wall under cyclic loading. The review reveals that though majority of the literature is available related to the seismic behaviour of shear wall, a very little work is reported on composite shear wall in high rise buildings. From the available research papers it is understood that the composite action is the key behind the better performance of composite shear wall. This new system shows satisfactory response over conventional shear walls in terms of displacement, storey drift, storey shear and other seismic parameters. It is understood that there are different forms of composite shear wall, but adopting the best suitable method for different seismic zone has to be studied further. Thus it is necessary to carry out more work in order to quantify the design criteria and structural performance of the composite shear wall under seismic effect. This emphasizes the importance of the study of composite shear wall with reference to Indian design criteria to promote the use of such successful construction technology.
