Abstract

A solution-focused approach to restorative justice emphases the use of language and the importance of relationships to help individuals develop their own solutions to problems. This paper explores the solution-focused approach of reentry planning circles, both in terms of previous research as well as new results and findings from programs through Hawai’i Friends of Restorative Justice. Reentry planning circles aim to help build community in two mains ways: (1) by engaging the loved ones of incarcerated individuals who suffered from their past behaviors and (2) by providing the incarcerated individuals the chance to make amends and plan for the future. Through the analysis of the effects on both the incarcerated individuals and the incarcerated individuals’ loved ones, this report provides strong support for the use and continued study of reentry planning circles.
