Abstract
Introduction: Carrots (Daucus carota Linn) are a multi-nutritional and multifunctional root vegetable, rich in natural phytochemicals (bioactive compounds), which are recognized for their nutraceutical effects and health benefits in human body. The human eyes are vital sense organ for vision, cognition and productive living. Several factors like aging, genetics and environment induces oxidative stress which leads to eyesight degeneration, chronic eyes defects (CEDs) and vision loss. Carrots phytochemicals serves as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that reduces oxidative vision loss.
Methodology: The review process involves 70 original research and review articles published between 2000 - 2020 from four (4) top journals databases: Elsevier, PubMed, ResearchGate and Plos One. In the search, six (6) Keywords: “Carrots”, “Nutraceuticals”, “Carotenoids”, “Antioxidants”, “Eyes Defects”, “Clinical trials” serves as a compass and the focus were on results of in-vivo and in-vitro studies.
Results/Discussion: Several clinical evidences shows that carrots contains numerous bioactive compounds especially carotenoids (Carotenes, Lutein and Zeaxanthin) which are effective in the regression and treatment of Eyes degenerations like: Nyctalopia, Myopia, Cataracts, Age-related Macular Diseases (AMD), and Glaucoma. These carotenoids serves as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that protects the eyes against oxidative vision loss. Increased consumption of carrots is a natural vision therapeutic and improver.
Conclusion/Recommendation: The nutraceutical roles of carrots carotenoids is traced principally to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Further research should explore carrot carotenoids as nutraceutical for other degenerative diseases like cancers. The regular healthy consumption of carrots will always be beneficial to improve eyes vision and ameliorate vision defects permanently.
