Abstract

The title of Human Rights Overboard: Seeking Asylum in Australia divulges little of the book's significance. The conclusion that people seeking asylum in Australia have been denied a range of human rights has been well documented in an array of books, papers and reports of domestic and international human rights bodies. Yet this book does fill a void in the available literature. Rather than allow the authors’ viewpoints to dominate the narrative, this book aims to give voice to the hitherto voiceless and ensure a permanent vehicle for bearing witness to preventable human misery. It does not make for easy reading. Even for the reader with some knowledge of the subject matter, this book has the capacity to shock, distress and enrage.
