Abstract

Singapore’s universities are among the world’s best, according to global rankings such as QS and Times Higher Education. However, the global Academic Freedom Index (Afi) rates Singapore closer to one-party regimes of Vietnam and China than to liberal Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. This survey of Singapore-based academics sheds light on such questions as: Do academics in Singapore subscribe to international norms concerning academic freedom? How prevalent is the sense of being constrained? What are the mechanisms through which academic work is restricted?

Keywords: higher education, Singapore, academic freedom
