Abstract

Since optoelectronic devices play a quite important role in optical access networks, it is necessary to integrate multiple laser diodes and photodiodes into one optical device. This effect stems from the continuous increase of the access network rate, which requires a longer optic path and enhanced power budget. Along these lines, a three-lens coupled optical path for application to integrated multiple laser diodes and photodiodes with high coupling efficiency is designed. Moreover, the coupling efficiency between the laser diode, the aspherical lenses and the single-mode fiber (SMF) is theoretically analyzed by enforcing the physical ray-tracing method. More specifically, the theoretical coupling efficiency is obtained through adjusting the position and the various parameters of the employed optical elements, such as the position and the angle offset, the divergence angle of the laser, as well as the communication wavelength. From our analysis, it is concluded that the maximum acquired coupling efficiency is 68.01% with the coupling and aligning experiment, which signifies the effectiveness of the theoretical approach and the proposed design scheme. Furthermore, from the simulated results it is divulged that the coupling efficiency between the laser diode and the single-mode fiber is effectively improved by 6.2% by increasing the matching coupling of the mode field.
