Abstract
The chapter examines legal questions related to the hypothetical secession of Quebec from Canada. It first briefly examines Canada’s basic political structure and the events which led to the 1995 referendum on independence. It then specifically analyses the aftermath of that cornerstone vote. Specifically, this paper critically examines the Quebec Secession Reference case before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Clarity Act passed by the Canadian federal parliament and Quebec’s own response to that legislation.
