Abstract

In-plane diagonal shear behaviour of concrete sandwich panels (CSP) is studied experimentally, and the effect of incorporating geosynthetics on the deformation capability and load-bearing capacity is reported. To improve the strength of concrete sandwich panels, two forms of geosynthetic material, plastic geogrid and polyester geogrid, are used. Diagonal compression tests have been carried out to better understand the behaviour of CSP under in-plane shear loading. To compute the deformation, the specimens are examined in displacement control mode. This paper discusses the effect of the different mixes, the effect of geosynthetics, load-deformation behaviour, deflection ductility factor, mode of failure, shear strength, and energy dissipation. In contrast to the control specimen, specimens cast with plastic geogrid had a 13% and 26% improvement in load-bearing capability for the two types of micro-concrete mixes used in this study. Polyester geogrid due to its thickness of strip has been unable to build a stronger bond with micro-concrete mix, resulting into decreased load bearing capacity
