Abstract
High-speed railway (HSR) has become a key mode for short- to medium-haul transportation intercity trips in China and has been regarded as a competitor to air transportation. Although extensive research has been conducted on access/egress mode choice to airports, very little attention has been paid to access/egress mode choice to HSR stations, especially regarding the locational variables, built environment, and traveler’s socio-economic variables. This paper aims to analyze the access/egress mode choice for intercity travels along the Beijing-Shanghai HSR region. Using the HSR survey in 2015, we found that in China, cities with smaller urban population sizes will lead to more taxi use in the access and access stages than cities with larger urban population size. Furthermore, this study confirms that more efficient public transportation systems and mixed land use will reduce the use of private cars and taxis.
