Abstract

Single crystal bars of superalloy DD5 with different crystal orientations were selected, to investigate the effect of crystal orientation on the as-cast structure and recrystallization behavior. It was observed that with increase in the deviation angle (β) between crystal orientation and solidification direction, the morphology of the as-cast dendrites changed from a uniform and symmetrical cross pattern to a coarse and asymmetrical one. After pre-deformation under different static pressures and a standard solution heat treatment, the microstructure of the single crystal bars was analyzed. In the test bars pre-deformed under loading pressure of 60, 100 and 150kgf, the average recrystallization depth (H) was measured to be about 425, 576, and 755μm, respectively. Besides the loading pressure, the crystal orientation has also significant influence on the growth of recrystallization grains. As the deviation angle (β) between the loading direction and the [001]-orientation of the bars changed from 4.7° to 48.4°, the recrystallization depth H increased continuously. Due to the pinning effect of the coarse γ ' precipitates and residual γ/γ' eutectics, the growth of the recrystallized grains in the inter-dendritic regions was slower than that in the dendrite trunks.
