Abstract

Aims: This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of chalazion at University Eye Hospital (UEH).

Methods and Material: A retrospective hospital–based study was conducted to review all cases diagnosed as chalazion in the University Eye Hospital, Kabul between MARCH 2017 and APRIL 2020. Data was obtained from the hospital database and operation theater registration. The age, sex, pattern of presentation and type of treatment administered were recorded.

Results: During 4 years, 60.333 patients visited our outpatient department, out of which 148 patients were diagnosed as chalazion and included in the study. The overall prevalence of chalazion is found to be 0.2% among the patients visiting University Eye Hospital. Out of 148 patients 47(31.8%) were male and 101 patients (68.2%) were female. Among 47 male 36 (76.6%) were 30 yrs. or less of age and 11 (23.4%) were more than 30 yrs. of age. Among 101 females 88 (87.1%) were 30 yrs. or less of age and 13 (12.9%) were more than 30 yrs. of age. Out of 47 male 28(59.6%) had chalazion in upper eye lid, 15(31.9%) had chalazion in lower eye lid and 4(8.5%) had multiple chalazia. Out of 101 females 65(64.3%) had chalazion in upper eyelid, 25(24.8%) patients had chalazion in lower eye lid and 11(10.9%) had multiple chalazia. One hundred seven cases (72.3%) were treated with incision and curettage.

Conclusions: Chalazion has low frequency of occurrence in the general population. The maximum cases of chalazion is seen in females (68.2%). Involvement of upper lid is found more than lower lid (62.8%). Surgery is the standard method of treatment.
