Abstract

HIGHLIGHTS• An effect-directed analysis methodology was developed for the identification of endocrine disrupting compounds present in a hospital effluent• Recoveries of different steps of the methodology (fractionation, rotary evaporation and SPE) were studied for 184 compounds, where major losses were detected during evaporation step.• Four compounds were identified and confirmed by suspect and target analysis as estrogenicity drivers, explaining almost 50% of the total estrogenic activity of the sample.• The importance of considering endocrine disruption as a prioritization criterion for water quality monitoring has been highlighted.
