Abstract

The formation of complex skills in collaborative robotics (cobotics) involves both a theoretical-cognitive and practical-empirical side. Measuring learning success is key to efficient skills development. Although the most common means of gauging learning are quiz-based tests or other subjective means that screen factual knowledge, they do not provide an objective assessment of skills development. In this pilot study, a novel performance index (PI) was developed to measure learning efficacy of a novel course in cobotics. The piloted PI considers three factors: time needed to complete a specific task, time working with assistance, and number of mistakes made. The analyzed learning content is based on a hybrid teaching concept, consisting of two days of distance learning and two days of on-site training in the pilot factory of the TU Wien. This paper presents the concept and a first empirical evaluation of a self-guided hybrid (distance/ hands-on) learning module using the piloted PI to measure individual learning outcomes. The results indicate the applicability of the tested PI to measure skill development in cobotics.
