Abstract

This paper aims to provide a brief descriptive overview of potential scenarios enabled by AI for the development of authoritarian states by reviewing and discussing recent literature on the impact of artificial intelligence on societies governed by autocratic regimes and democratically governed societies in which autocratic actors are struggling for power. Applications are categorized into the areas of regime power and durability, economic development, military capability, political structures and societal change for closer examination.
