Abstract

Over recent years the esports industry has boomed. It has become a multi-billion-dollar entertainment phenomenon. However, this lucrative industry remains largely unregulated with many in the industry comparing it to the Wild West. As an industry that operates adjacent to the sporting world, we are starting to see some of traditional sports greatest sins rear their head in esports. Like in sports, doping has become one of esports’ primary integrity issues. The substances of choice for these athletes are nootropics which allow them to concentrate for longer periods of time in training and in competition. Doping puts the health of athletes, integrity of the competitions and integrity of the industry at stake. However, without clear international governance, questions arise as to whether the esports industry can adequately address this challenge. This article will answer how and to what extent the esports industry can look to the World Anti-Doping Agency and to address its doping issues by arguing that the esports industry should turn to WADA to handle its doping concerns.
