Abstract

This short article aims to provide a snapshot of social movements in Mainland China starting in the late 1990s with an examination of some existing studies in the literature. By discussing the style of online activism and the nature of online censorship and by offering a small case study of environmentalism, this article tries to shed some light on the rather complex characteristics of collective actions and social cleavages in an authoritarian regime.

Keywords: Collective Action, Social Movement, China
