Abstract

Spanish Abstract: Esta voz del Diccionario expone las características de los religiosos desde la perspectiva del derecho canónico hispanoamericano de los siglos XVI al XVIII. La voz toma en cuenta las clasificaciones de las órdenes religiosas; los mecanismos de admisión, renuncia y expulsión de un reglar en una orden religiosa; la importancia de los votos esenciales de pobreza, castidad y obediencia en la vida comunitaria; las bases del estado religioso y la vida monástica femenina. Además, trata el tema de los religiosos en Indias como misioneros, mediadores y autores de materiales para la conversión de los naturales. Asimismo, se incluye un balance historiográfico con las principales líneas de investigación desarrolladas en los años recientes.

English Abstract: This entry of the DCH Dictionary sets out the characteristics of members of religious orders from the perspective of Spanish-American canon law between the 16th to the 18th centuries. The article considers the classification of religious orders; the mechanisms of admission, renunciation, and expulsion of a friar or a nun in a religious order; the importance of the essential vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in community life; the bases of the religious state; and female monastic life. It also explains the role of the members of religious orders as missionaries, mediators, and authors of materials for the conversion of indigenous people. The article closes with a historiographical discussion of the main lines of research developed in recent years.
