Abstract

This short article draws existing data and charts from multiple sources and compares the outcomes of the Brexit referendum in 2016 and the U.K. general elections in 2017 and 2019. By taking a close look at the voters’ demographic breakdown, light could be shed on the transformation from class-based voting in the Left/Right “Old Politics” toward value-based voting in the GAL/TAN “New Politics.” With an additional reference to Hooghe et al. (2002), this article shows that European integration has been playing an important role in the renewed landscape of political contestation.
