Abstract

Religion is often seen as a mere private preference, choice, or value, or an identity with no more meaning or social impact than any other preference, choice, value, or identity. This paper is an initial effort to broadly bring together empirical research and sociological and political theory on the social goods and pro-social values religious belief, practice, and communities foster. While recognizing that, for its practitioners, religion has its own internal logic and rationales, I hope to start a discussion about the social benefits of religion and account for some of the significant ways in which religion contributes to society.
