Abstract

Public perception of road traffic accidents in selected countries of Asia namely Malaysia and Thailand, of which both countries categorised as among the deadliest roads in the world is affecting the public’s lives, their family, society, national health systems and economy. The fact that road traffic accident is regarded as number one killer for young adults age below 29 years old, evidently much of the attentions spotlighted on causes that resulting the road traffic accidents instead of the role of public perception of road traffic accidents. Albeit public perception of road traffic accidents is one of human factors associated with causes of road traffic accident, study on public perception remains very little. The current article presents a systematic review of existing literatures on Malaysia and Thailand within a time series of 10 years from 2009 until 2019, published on database of Scopus and Web of Science indexed journal to understand various outcomes in regard to public perceptions of road traffic accidents.  The systematic review was guided by review method of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The findings show that both Malaysia and Thailand have significant associations between perception of road traffic accidents and the outcome of road traffic accidents. It appears that the underlying possible factor will determines public’s behaviour which in turn either to promote good and safer habit or bad and dangerous habit when being on the road. It is suggested that more studies and further research to be made pertaining to perception of road traffic accident, this not limited to seldom-heard road users involved in the study with broader perception.
