Abstract

This chapter, a contribution to the forthcoming edited volume Leading Works in International Law, revisits “Exiting Treaties,” an article that I published in the Virginia Law Review in 2005. The chapter first reviews the article’s theoretical, empirical, and normative contributions to the analysis of treaty denunciations and withdrawals. It then summarizes how “Exiting Treaties” shaped my own research agenda and influenced other legal scholars and political scientists who study the design of international agreements. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the article’s legacy and suggesting two avenues for future research.
