Abstract

The European Union lawmakers have agreed in April 2022 on an important new law - the Digital Markets Act - which will regulate the Big Tech platforms (such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon or Microsoft) in order to make the digital markets more contestable and fairer, and ultimately increase innovation and users choice in the digital space. Our paper reviews the main substantive components of the new law, the institutional and enforcement design, and its relationship with antitrust. The paper also explains the main changes introduced by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers of the EU to the original Commission Bill and provides a critique of the agreed new legislation.
