Abstract

This paper explores various aspects of government propaganda. We begin by reviewing the key literature in economics related to politics, information, and propaganda. We then discuss the techniques and functions of government propaganda before turning to the political economy of propaganda. We place emphasis on the role that information asymmetries in political institutions play in creating space for disseminating government propaganda. We consider these dynamics in the context of both autocracies and democracies. The final section explores several potential mechanisms for checking the nefarious effects of government propaganda.

Keywords: propaganda, democracy, autocracy, information asymmetry
