Abstract

One of the environmental concerns plaguing industrialised nations is gas flaring. The world bank has flagged gas flaring as an emergency predicament capable of leading to the breakdown of human development and the environmental sustainability without appropriate actions. Nigeria today remains a major producer of crude oil, situating it within the red zone for climate impact.

It is the findings of this article that the reliance on crude oil to sustain Nigeria’s economy, has led to a high rate of gas flaring during oil exploitation which results in the emission of greenhouse gases that are hazardous to man’s health and environment. It also a waste of natural resources which could have been used to actualize billions of dollars for the federal government or could have alternatively been used to generate electricity. The article further revealed that despite the numerous laws enacted to curb gas flaring, oil firms continue to flare gas.
