Abstract

The general understanding that science in general and physics in particular and human values are two exclusive domains or science is values-neutral is seriously challenged once we meditate upon the philosophical significance of the remarkable discoveries of the theoretical and experimental aspects of modern physics as highlighted by some of the greatest scientific minds of our times. The present paper initially introduces a brief discourse on the development of early thoughts on physics in the Greek as well as in the Indian civilization. Thereafter, pointing out the salient developments during the Renaissance period in Europe, it highlights the spectacular developments of modern physics. Once these developments are seen in the light of Indian Vedanta, the crown jewel of philosophical schools of India, very interesting implications may be derived for human values. The paper presents a Vedantic definition of the term ‘values’ with illustrations and points to a remarkable convergence between modern physics and ancient Vedanta, leading to a grand relationship between physics and values which has profound significance for world peace.
