Is There a Kuznets Curve for Forest Product Footprint? – Empirical Evidence from India

41 Pages Posted: 29 Jun 2022

Abstract

The study examines the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve for Forest footprint in India. Based on the Autoregressive Distributive Lag and its non-linear version, we show that India has an N-shaped forest footprint induced environmental Kuznets curve. By employing necessary and sufficient conditions, we show the existence of two real and distinct per capita Gross Domestic Product turning points. The study predicts the out-of-sample turning points using the current average per capita growth rate and warns about a rise in forest footprint by 2023. The government of India must therefore take pre-emptive measures for the protection of forests.
