Preprints with The Lancet is part of SSRN´s First Look, a place where journals identify content of interest prior to publication. Authors have opted in at submission to The Lancet family of journals to post their preprints on Preprints with The Lancet. The usual SSRN checks and a Lancet-specific check for appropriateness and transparency have been applied. Preprints available here are not Lancet publications or necessarily under review with a Lancet journal. These preprints are early stage research papers that have not been peer-reviewed. The findings should not be used for clinical or public health decision making and should not be presented to a lay audience without highlighting that they are preliminary and have not been peer-reviewed. More...Abstract
Background: Environmental service workers are the critical first line of defence against health care-associated infections. It is important to understand the knowledge, attitudes, practice, and experience regarding infection prevention and control for environmental service workers. However, a knowledge, attitudes, practice, and experience questionnaire evaluation tool regarding infection prevention and control for environmental service workers has not been designed.
Methods: We performed two rounds of the Delphi technique and one round of a pilot survey.
Findings: Two Delphi rounds were completed by 15 eligible experts (48.07 ± 7.98 y). Over half the experts were postgraduates (53.33%, n = 8) or worked as clinical staff or infection prevention and control staff (60%, n = 9). Regarding the revised questionnaire, the expert panellists’ ratings of each item met the criteria (correlation value Kendall's W = 0.221/0.096; importance value Kendall's W = 0.221/0.101, P < 0.05). Pilot survey with 1176 ESWs, all items had good reliability and validity, as shown by Cronbach's α =0.967 and S-CVI/Ave = 0.989. The questionnaire comprised 49 items across four subscales.
Interpretation: The study findings will provide a tool for future national investigations of the current infection prevention and control situation among environmental service workers.
Funding Information: This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.
Declaration of Interests: We declare that we have no conflict of interest.
Ethics Approval Statement: The study obtained the approval of the Institutional Review Board of Wuhan University (NO: 2021119). Written informed consent was obtained from each recruited patient before the questionnaire survey was administered.
