Abstract

Highlights• Combustion and emission of water-containing n-butanol/diesel blends are investigated.• BW10 exhibits concentrated heat release and high brake thermal efficiency.• NOx emission of BW5 and BW10 increased while that of BW20 decreased• BW10 shows the greatest decline in the number concentration of ultrafine particles.• GMDs of ultrafine particles is inversely proportional to butanol amount.

Keywords: biofuel, hydrous n-butanol, emulsion fuel, common-rail diesel engine, Combustion characteristics, particulate emission
