Abstract

Environmental rule of law—respect for and enforcement of environmental laws—is a necessary condition for effective climate-change action. Drawing on the United Nations Environment Programme’s 2019 Environmental Rule of Law report, this comment considers the status of environmental rule of law worldwide and the implications for climate stability. In the face of continued nonenforcement of environmental laws and the need for laws to evolve with developing scientific understandings, significant challenges remain for the realisation of environmental rule of law worldwide.
