Abstract

English Abstract:
The existence of a penalty for women who become mothers is a reality in several countries. Evidences suggest that after the birth of their first child, women leave the labor market or self-select to work in environments that provide them the flexibility required to deal with double shift responsibilities, which may involve leaving the formal sector and the loss, not only of wages, but also of benefits and social security. Based on this, the objective of this work is to analyze the changes in the labor market participation of women who become mothers and the possible penalties that these women encounter after the event of the birth of their first child. To analyze the impact of motherhood on the rate of female participation in the labor market, a multinomial logit model with fixed effects is adopted and microdata from the Continuous PNAD (IBGE) are used for the period between 2012 and 2019. In an unprecedented way, a strategy of expanding the observation window of individuals in the Continuous PNAD panel is used by of propensity score matching. The results show that the estimated probability of inactivity for women who are mothers of a baby varies between 1.87 and 2.87 times the probability of being employed in the formal sector, depending on the sample and model used.
