The purpose of this discussion paper is to provide some context and commentary regarding the FAR 2023 hiring season. This version follows the discussion paper that I wrote last year for the 2022 Hiring Season.

I begin by analyzing the demand-side of the equation—the hiring numbers, preferences, etc. Then, I turn to the supply-side of the equation—the applicants. While I provide some commentary below, I do not intend to make bright-line conclusions with this discussion.

Initially, this discussion paper was a follow up to my tweets from August 2022, where I posted my 2022 estimates, that garnered significant attention. I post this 2023 version per the request of several members in the academy.
