Performance Evaluation of Green Concrete: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Green concrete is one of the environmentally friendly products and a suitable alternative to conventional concrete. The use of various kinds of waste in its production process is considered an important step towards achieving the goals of sustainable development. Considering that in recent years, the protection of natural resources, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the reduction of landfills are some of the most important concerns of mankind, and concrete is one of the most popular construction materials, we are facing an increasing demand for green concrete. On average, 1.89 billion tons of conventional concrete is produced worldwide every year, replacing it with green concrete will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30%. The waste materials used in the production of this type of concrete include three general categories: agricultural, industrial, and urban, which lead to the production of different types of green concrete, such as ultra-high performance concrete, light concrete, geopolymer concrete, high-performance concrete, etc. Green concrete has many advantages in terms of resistance, efficiency, durability, and costs compared to normal concrete. It introduces its potential features to human society and creates awareness programs about recycling issues, especially in companies whose activities involve the production of industrial waste. This review concentrates on creating awareness to utilize the discarded materials and also highlights the technology Green Concrete production. The results of this study showed the better performance of new materials compared to the conventional ones.
