Abstract

This chapter explores whether animals can be considered as ‘property’ and ‘objects’ under the law of armed conflict, in particular under Article 23(g) of the 1899/1907 Hague Regulations on the Laws and Customs of War on Land and under the law of targeting codified in the 1977 Protocol I Additional to the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the Protection of Victims of War. The purpose is to verify whether these rules apply to animals and, if so, to discuss to what extent they protect them from destruction, seizure and attack in the conduct of hostilities.

Keywords: animal welfare, law of armed conflict, international law
