Abstract

Alternative production processes using waste are necessary to preserve non-renewable resources and prevent scarcity of materials for future generations. Biowaste, the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, is an abundant and easily available organic material that can be fractionated into building blocks from which fermentative processes can be designed. This paper proposes a valorization route for the residual solid fraction after enzymatic hydrolysis of the biowaste based on solid-state fermentation. Two cosubstrates were successfully applied to promote the growth of the bacterial biopesticide producer Bacillus thuringiensis in a pilot-scale bioreactor. Despite the used cosubstrate, the final microbial community was considerably similar indicating a microbial specialization. The final product contained 4 × 108 spores per gram of dry matter and also crystal proteins of this bacteria, known for their toxic activity against insect pests. This process enables the sustainable valorization of all the materials involved in enzymatic hydrolysates from biowaste.
