Abstract

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) enjoy a wide variety of applications. Their versatility led many private companies, such as Google and Amazon, to invest heavily into their development. The exponentially growing market and the increase in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles has led many jurisdictions to introduce a dedicated registration and authorisation regime. While policymakers are largely concerned with the safety implications of this growing market, finance aspects have mostly been neglected. This article attempts to offer a discussion on how and whether the UAS market can be effectively regulated under the regime of the Cape Town Convention.
