Corrosion of Thermal Barrier Coatings for Gas Turbines by Air Pollution

Abstract
Thermal barrier coatings are popularly used on high temperature components of gas turbines. We have observed that TBCs could be seriously corroded by acidic air pollution in natural environment. We have also revealed the corrosion mechanism which could be related to the following two chemical processes: (1) YSZ is corroded by moisture, and the acidic air pollution accelerates the corrosion. (2) The electrode potential difference between bond coat and substrate results in the corrosion of bond coat in acidic air pollution.
