Abstract

Research works related to improving the performance of Reactive mufflers to get reduced noise and emission are reviewed in this paper. Reactive mufflers use the principle of destructive interference for attenuation of noise. There are a lot of design parameters and targets related to the design of mufflers. Effect of design targets like Transmission loss (TL), Back pressure, Insertion loss etc. are discussed in this work. Most of the results reported in literature are out of numerical studies and simulations (using commercial software such as ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.), whereas as a few investigations are based on experimental analysis. The review presented in this paper will help researchers to identify the areas where there is a scope for further investigations.

Keywords: Muffler, Exhaust system, Transmission loss, Noise, Emission, Performance
