Abstract

English abstract<: This allusion to Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is intended to set Christopher Marlowe's drama 'The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus' in a psychological light. The play, written towards the end of Marlowe's life (1593) is here seen as an experiment in the splitting of personality though an ambivalent self-representation of the author. The ending of the B text of Doctor Faustus shows on Marlowe's part an element of self-projection on the character of Faustus, both coming from a humble family background, and Marlowe was probably frightened about the possible consequences of his impious reflections.
