Abstract
Gerard O'Neill asked: "Is the surface of a planet really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?" Using 20th century knowledge to specify the needed (but never funded) research and development (R&D) program, O'Neill found that there is indeed a happy, superior ("more Earthlike than Earth") alternative to planets. In this way we find that there is practically unlimited free land available in extraterrestrial space -- "Green-place In Free-space" (GIF) habitats (towns, cities, jungles, and much more). The GIF project would initiate a new chapter in the history of the world, including many biospheres instead of one, an end to poverty, and an abundant life for all.
