Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between fertility dynamics and female labor force participation in Italy after WWII. By integrating extant statistics with census data and new reconstructions at the regional level, we first provide stylized facts about the relationship between female participation and fertility, also in international comparison. Second, we analyze possible causal links between female participation and fertility rates using the Bank of Italy’s Survey of Household Income and Wealth micro-data. Our macro and micro results confirm that the relationship between fertility and mothers’ participation has been negative in the past three decades. Our regional analysis shows that this result is mostly driven by the least educated women, who are probably the poorest as education positively correlates with income. By the use of micro-data we consistently show that this effect is driven by women in the lowest two quartiles of household’s income distribution.
