Abstract

Recognising rivers as legal or living entities can be a way to bring ourselves (back) into good relations with rivers. This short article takes the reader on a global tour of rivers being recognised as legal or living entities, and then asks the reader to reconsider their relationship with the river that means the most to them. In doing so, it reminds the reader that although legal recognition of the status of rivers is important, it is the relationship between us that can be the most transformative element.

Keywords: legal rights, river, living entity, relationship, river health, Lake Erie, Birrarung, Yarra
