Abstract

A lot of academics, working in most fields in the humanities and social sciences, could usefully up their media game. Engaging with the media can bring benefits – to you and your work, and with luck, wider society. Drawing on over 25 years of media work, this paper offers advice on engaging with the media. I hope it will be of use to people considering engaging beyond academia, as well, perhaps, to some of those who have already started but who are struggling. Much of it is stuff I wish someone had told me at the beginning of my career – although whether I would have listened is another matter entirely. The paper also contains various cultural references, all of which go to show how old I am. I cannot imagine where this might get published, so it's here, in the hope that it is of use to new, and maybe even to some more established, researchers.
