This article examines the recent Grand Chamber judgment of Sanchez-Sanchez v United Kingdom, concerning the circumstances under which extraditing an individual to face a life sentence in another country may raise issues under art. 3 ECHR. It explains the court’s ruling and raises concerns about its reasoning, particularly with respect to the importance accorded to the division between substantive and procedural aspects of obligations under the Convention.
