Effect of Mwcnts Chemically Grafted with Pbpesk by Diazotization on the Mechanical Properties of Cf/Poly(Aryl Bis-Phthalazinone Ether Sulfone Ketone) Composites

Abstract

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) possess superior mechanical, conductive, and thermal properties, yet present the problem of poor dispersion and weak interfacial bonding. Meantime, because the thermoplastic resin has the disadvantage of high molding temperature and high viscosity of the solution, which is more unfavorable to the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the matrix. To mitigate these issues, poly(aryl bis-phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PBPESK) has been successfully grafted to MWCNTs by diazotization to form PBPESK@MWCNTs. As a result, the flexural strength, elastic modulus and interlaminar shear strength of the composites were increased by 42.3%, 44.6% and 42.9%, up to 1696 MPa, 162 GPa and 70 MPa, respectively, by adding PBPESK@MWCNTs to the continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin matrix composites. According to the results of the DMA test, the energy storage modulus and service temperature were increased by 42 GPa and 7 °C, respectively. Overall, this study highlights the potential of functionalized MWCNTs as a means to enhance the mechanical properties of composite materials, which could have important implications for a range of engineering applications.
