Abstract

This working paper is part of a series with the overall title of “The Long Learning Journey”, retracing stages in the evolution of my intellectual curiosity and research work. In this paper, the focus is on analyzing the management processes of diversified multinational companies (MNCs). In particular, the paper analyzes how MNCs can combine and transcend responsiveness to local conditions and imperatives (often driven by host country governments) and globally competitive demands in a worldwide oligopoly. The paper details the management processes and tools used in that balancing act. Additionally, it covers how the top management of MNCs can shift priorities between local national responsiveness and global integration. With the current return to forms of “semi globalization” being highly influenced by geopolitical rifts, these issues are regaining currency and relevance.

Keywords: Multinational Companies, Global Integration, Local Responsiveness, Differentiated Global Networks, Management Processes, Administrative Tools, Semi-globalization
