Abstract

The commitment made in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to 'leave no one behind' can only be kept if rural transport is given the priority it deserves in order to realize more than half of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite the fact that there is not a specific aim for rural access within the SDGs, there are a great many connections between rural access and the SDGs. This write up intends to examine the importance of rural transport, energy and financial access in ensuring rural development in Zimbabwe. This write up extends on the perspectives provided in earlier rural infrastructure-focused review papers, enhances those perspectives, and cross-references those perspectives. Firstly, this work gives a thorough look into the progress of the rural transportation sector in recent years by focusing on the thematic relationships between infrastructure and other components of sustainable development. It also outlines a holistic approach to rural transport, developing a transport policy and strategy, the importance of transport in rural development, policy implications for rural transportation system, transport as a necessity for poverty reduction and issues to be considered in rural transport development.

Keywords: rural development, sustainable development, community, poverty, rural transportation
