Abstract

Docking is a crucial part of a ship’s lifecycle. Among different types of docking, Marine Railway type docking is one of the most common methods. While docking a ship in this method, many risks are involved, such as wire failure, cradle/trolley wheel derailment, power failure, breakage of chain of winch, breakage of block wood, etc., some of which can result in significant financial loss. In this paper, a probabilistic risk analysis approach is introduced. A physics-based mathematical model is developed for a “Marine Railway” type dockyard in Bangladesh based on which probabilistic risk analysis is carried out. Prediction of the number of failures that could occur within a certain period is evaluated. Some relevant measurements are proposed to decrease risks using the Risk Control Option.
