Abstract
The objective of the study is to propose a conversion design of an idle ferry port in Madura Island into a green ship recycling yard, so that the existing traditional environmentally unfriendly ship recycling activities in the neighbouring area can be relocated into a green ship recycling yard. Kamal ferry port in Bangkalan, Madura Island, which used to be a very busy crossing ferry terminal from Madura to Surabaya, has become idle since the opening of Suramadu crossing bridge in 2009. On the other hand, next to the ferry port is the largest traditional ship recycling location in Indonesia that pays less attention to the health and safety of the workers, and the impact to the environment. Site visits and literature studies were conducted, to identify the related regulations on the ship recycling activities, and to investigate the feasibility of converting the port into a green ship recycling yard. The proposed design has three slip ways to lift up the ships onto the land, with the capacity up to 10,000 dwt, and supported by all necessary facilities and equipment required as a green ship recycling yard.
